We are in interesting times indeed. I felt that there were many dental practitioners out there who were feeling overwhelmed and under prepared for the challenges that we are to face over the coming months and years. Options for change is almost upon us, and even the BDA is seen to shrug its shoulders when asked “What is to happen”. So what do we do?

Well, we can gain knowledge and prepare ourselves. The problem is that most practice principles don’t have the time to do anything but work on their patients. Many of you are working more hours than you want to (be honest with yourself). Many more of you are stressed, some to the point of suffering health problems. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to do what we want to do. It can sometimes seem as if the job has becomes a burden. Of course you can always sell your practice……or can you? Most of the corporate bodies have closed their books to new acquisitions, and the young blood coming out of dental school seem to have no interest in being anything other than associates. You feel trapped with an uncertain future. And when the PCT comes and examines your practice (and you can bet your bottom dollar they will be checking the management, audit and administration structure) how do you feel you will fair? What are we to do?

Get prepared. The products on this site are designed to help streamline the running of your practice (as well as increasing its profitability). This is not clinical governance or practice management. This is the vital “stuff” missing from most of said packages available today. It’s all well and good knowing how to run an audit on radiographs, but do you have a written system for dealing with a receptionist who phones in sick? Have you already decided what to do when your associate gives you three months notice? Is this in writing? It’s all well and good knowing what to do when your patient has a heart attack in the surgery. But do you know all the medical complications that point to a risk of this occurring in your surgery? Just remind me how to manage that patient on Steroids?

And how about raising your income? Do you actually know what motivates people to buy, or are you still spending 5 minutes on a check up? Do you know how to spend time with your best patients to find the treatment they actually want from you, or are you too busy tread-milling more and more of the patients you would rather never see again? Enjoying dentistry, or dreading Monday morning?  When you learn to express treatment options in an ethical manner, the patient will be able to choose the option that is right for them.  And if that means that they choose the cheaper option, then you have the satisfaction in knowing you have full consent for treatment.  This is not about selling swanky dentistry.  This is about explaining treatment options in a way that patients understand.
